Mural Projects

Over the past year, NHRPD has made adding murals to our parks a top priority—and now, you can find 6 vibrant murals across 5 different parks! Check out the details and photos below to see how these artworks are bringing our spaces to life.

Karl Rosario Park

The first mural in the NHRPD park system was completed at Karl Rosario Park in April 2024. Leading up to the project, staff gathered input from the neighborhood to help shape the design. The community chose a vibrant mix of flowers, animals, and the words “North Highlands” to span the 120-foot-long wall. Later, at our Art in the Park event in August 2024, community members were invited to add their handprints to the mural—many of which were transformed into colorful flowers, making the artwork even more personal and meaningful.

Freedom Park

Our second mural was installed at Freedom Park in September 2024! This space-themed design wraps around all four walls of the restroom building and features Earth, spaceships, and an astronaut. During the 2024 Celebrate North Highlands event, community members helped bring the mural to life by painting stars across the sky!

Thanks to a generous $35,000 grant from the Synergy Project and a partnership with PRO Youth & Families, NHRPD is proud to bring three new murals to our community parks. These murals were designed with direct input from local youth and teens through a comprehensive outreach process that included school and library visits, surveys, park programs, and an email campaign.

The Synergy Project is 100% funded by the Office of Population Affairs (OPA) of the U.S Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The information shared in this post does not necessarily represent the official views, nor an endorsement by, OPA/OASH/HHS.

Each mural reflects the creativity and voices of our young residents and can be found at the following locations:
